In this chapter, we learn that the young man's name is Shmoop, and he's a member of the Brotherhood of Magicians. He's been studying the subject of magic for a long time, and has come up with a brilliant idea to harness the power of the sun to revive the dead. He wants to use the sun's energy to resurrect the dead, but he doesn't know how to do it, because he has a younger brother who died when he was a young child. He started to study how people were born and why they died, and then he came up with the idea of using the sun as a portal to the past to bring the dead back to life. This idea was a big hit with the Brotherhood, and they all hoped he'd be able to resurrect his brother, but the boy didn't come back. So he decided to create a new form of magic to try and resurrect him. The final form was called a demon, and it was made of blood, flesh, and spirit. This is a big deal, because Shmiller is the only person in the Brotherhood who's ever been able to summon his brother back. The boy is psyched to be reunited with his brother.
