In this chapter, we are introduced to a new character, a young woman named Elmire. Elmire tells us that she is going on a two-week trip with her boyfriend, and she asks that her name not be mentioned in the conversation. We learn that Elmire is a member of the Brotherhood, and that she and the other Brotherhood members have taken down one of the knights of the Crusades. She tells the others that they are friends now and that they have just completed a "cooperation raid" . She says that they may be young girls but they are "worthy companions" for Elmire and she will continue to vote for the Brotherhood until the votes are counted. She also says that she knows that the Brotherhood members are trying to revive the dead man, but she doesn't know what the man is trying to do. She wants to know why the Brotherhood has eight yea votes and one nay vote. She asks the Brotherhood to explain what they are doing, and the Brotherhood replies that they don't have time to worry about it. She adds that they will have their answer in a few minutes.
