About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that he came up with this idea because he heard that his father had written a secret in the book. He says that he doesn't want to read the book, because he's never read it, but that he'll burn it anyway. The narrator explains that he heard about the book from his father, who said that the book was "a load of dung" . He also says that the fact that his dad wrote such a bad book brought shame to his name. He adds that he wrote a bad novel as well, and his father abandoned his family to write this "bad novel" , but as the years went by, the hatred of the duke turned to regret. So, the narrator says, his father might not have the world if he hadn't spoken those nasty things about his father. So the narrator decides to cast a spell on the book so that the letters will re-appear on the inside, too. He's going to go home and burn it.
