The chapter opens with a description of pufairy, who is now 25 years old. He was once a thin wizard, but he was awakened by his love for food. During the period when he had his partner's girlfriends, he tried to act strong, but they rejected him. Now, however, he has lost his old love for Eustacia. She has written the magic marks on his clothes, so they have to remove their clothes. He asks her if she would like to use a sense link, but she says she doesn't think she would want to. He tells her that he is prepared to die if she wants to keep her distance from him. She tells him that she is engaged to marry him, but that she can't be the one he wants her to be. She asks him if he has learned anything about the magic at the games, and he says he has. She wonders if he is lying, and wonders if it is forbidden for a person to fall for someone who is traveling the path all he wants for is her happiness.
