This chapter opens with a flashback to the beginning of the story, when the Black Knight is awakened. He tells the audience that he is the one who attacked the town. He explains that he has seen countless battles over the past four hundred years, but that one day he learned the value of human life. He says that if he were to stop stealing souls, his magic would be different. He asks if he is all right, and he says that he may be, but he still wants to know who the attacker was. He knows that he will have to tell the audience someday, but, he says, he thought of his life as "the first time around. He could correct all of the mistakes he had made, and when the magic world was perfected, he could go back his second time around to be his true again. He cannot ask the audience to forgive him, for he was a demon, but at least he can say, "I'm sorry, but you hate see me so much, you can kill me. You won't have to bloody your lovely hands any more. Just go away, go find happiness. I love you. I forgive you.
