In this chapter, Renji explains that he has been wondering how this obelisk tests his talent. He thinks that talent is different than one's ability, which is tested by a trial. He wonders if there is a special way to test his talent, and he wonders if the rules on the obelisk are the same rules as the ones he knows. He speculates that perhaps the obelisk has sensed the powers of rules within him, and placed the nine obelisks there. He explains that since he came back to the central area, he has searched the entire can hall but could not find a place to comprehend the power of the rules. The first layer of rules is called "jump," and the second layer, called "tear," is the ability to rip apart the space between two points. Renji realizes that he is now on the seventh level of the temple. He compares himself to a bastard who always feels powerless when facing a foe. He realizes that the first step in the law of the space is to jump. The second step is to "tear." It allows one to form a blade and toss it as a weapon. The obelisk is beginning to disappear, and Renji wonders if he has enough time to complete the test.
