This chapter opens on the island of Ganymede, where the monk is trying to find a place to hide from the storm. He finds that the rock layer around the island is so thick that even a middle-ranking god would find it hard to dig through. He sees a cavern below the rock, which seems to be filled with mud. He wonders if the mud is borrowed from the island, and wonders if there is a race of gods who look like them. He also wonders if they are living creatures, but they are not. He thinks they are simply statues left by someone. The cave has also changed, and the entrance is gone.
