About This Chapter
This chapter's epigraph comes from a famous poem by the famous poet and mystic Siddhartha. The poem tells of an immortal who lives for thousands of years and then dies at the end of his or her lifetime. The poet says that the immortal will die after experiencing five "marks of decay" , which is the time it takes for the immortal to die. He says that this is because the immortals cannot resist the "erosion of time" . He tells the story of a man named tian-miao who built an immortal tomb. The tomb was full of treasures, but no one had managed to enter it. Many warriors tried to get into the tomb, but they were unsuccessful. There were also nine "marks" on the side of the tomb that guarded it. Eventually, the warriors learned that these were the "lamps of vigil" that guarded the tomb. They gathered six of them and lit them to see how many lamps they had found. The 8th lamp would be lit as soon as it appeared, and the immortal tomb would be unlocked. The master of the manor says that he can't use the lamp because it belongs to him. He asks the girl if she is one of his "cloud halls" and asks her to light the lamp with him. The girl says that she doesn't know who she is, but she does know that she is from "cloud hall" and that she can send messages through the lamp when she is in the future. This is her message token, and she can use it to
