The chapter opens with a flashback to the sky-book pavilion, where the skybeasts were competing against one another for the right to choose their own skills. The narrator tells us that the dragon, who is also called the "woovern," is able to completely control the power of the woovern. He says that he would not have lived without his friends, who have helped him choose his own skills in the past. Now, he says, the dragon is trying to eat the "spear made of the vertebrae" of a "wyvern." The narrator says that it is impossible for the dragon to eat such a thing without raising suspicion. He tells the story of how he was in the skybook pavilion when he was choosing skills, and how he would have been unable to survive without the help of the other students. He explains that he was born as the "most formidable creature" and that all living things could only kneel before him. The roar of the dragon makes the disciples uncomfortable, and the narrator says he thinks he has said too many things during the competition that he did not expect. He thinks that wang-yun is favored by fate, but that luo-zheng may still have some trump cards left. The dragon is getting warmer and the disciples are getting uncomfortable. The master says he should step in to help, and that the pressure is getting too great. He is surprised to see that he can still stand, and he says that the three roars are stronger than the one before them. He feels that his knees are giving in to the pressure, and says that if he uses any more powerful attacks, he'll die. He wants to thank the disciples for allowing him to surrender, and tells them that he will give them the chance to just surrender.
