In this chapter, we learn that the Lord of punishment is questioning the power of the lord of heaven, while the other lords are rebelling against the authority of the other lord. The lord of punishment tells the lords that they have the right to choose between the two lords. He tells them that he will not betray the nocturnals, but will not support them anymore. He says that anyone who escapes the battlefield will be punished. The lords are fleeing frantically, and he doesn't believe that they will be able to get away. The first step, he says, is to isolate and destroy the two Lords of the Night-Risers. The second step is to destroy their "pools of faith," which is the "most important resource" of their nocturnal race. The power of faith is limited, but the three lords share it. If only one pool is left, all the power belongs to one lord who will eventually increase his or her strength.
