In this short chapter, the reader is introduced to a number of characters who have been introduced in the previous chapters. The first of these characters is a "power broker" , a person who deals with the supernatural. The power broker is described as a "Hindu demon" . The other characters are described as "amaryllis" and "sara pezzini." The first character introduces himself as "ron marz" and asks the others to guess who he is. The second character answers the power broker's questions in the same order as the first. The third character asks the first two if they are in his house, and the fourth asks the second if they were killed in an attempt to "shift." The fourth asks why they are there. The answer to the first question is that the newspaper has published a story about the two of them being killed in the attempt, and now the sheriff's employer wants to meet them. This is a good opportunity for the two to get to know each other better, since they will not be able to guess each other's identities. The fourth character answers that they have a "living thing" in their house, who is waiting for them, and that the witchblade is a weapon that they can use to kill each other. The fifth character asks "an agent" to handle the supernatural, since "they're amateurs."
