About This Chapter
The next morning, the detective wonders if he's been caught up in "red tape," "local politics," and "all this other crap" . He doesn't know who the mysterious woman is, but he suspects that she's somehow involved in something at the company. He's also worried that the company's two head honchos might be involved. The detective admits that he has a hard time wrapping his head around what's going on. He wonders if the woman is a witch, and he wonders if there's anything supernatural about the group of people who call themselves the "solites." The detective says that they've been investigating a group of solites, and they're suspicious of the group's supernatural powers. He tells the detective to "keep an open mind" about the case, and the two of them decide that they can either "do this here" or "downtown" , where they'll be able to find the woman. They're also going to use a search warrant to look for Jacob's room, which the detective suspects may have been used to commit a crime. When the detective asks what he showed the woman, she tells him that it was his girlfriend from the night before. She's glad that the detective apologized for being rash, because she thinks that Jacob has a good heart, but the "people" in the solite group do weird things. She tells the story of how she used to be happy that Jacob was hanging out with them, but then he stopped hanging out and forbade them to associate with him anymore. She asks the detective what they can do now, since she has an appointment. She says that she grew up in a small town in Nova Scotia, and that patience was a "norm" in her life. She wants to find a permanent home for her, and she invites him to call her home until he can find a place for her
