About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that wendell is running for office as a member of the "citizen anti-violence society" in the city of bronzeville. Wendell has a law degree from Georgetown, and he's running against a guy named gene baron, who used to be the head of the House of Representatives. He's also running against another guy named Brent fowler, who's got a bunch of money in a bank account in the "wild 100s" neighborhood of the city. The narrator tells us that he doesn't know who pushed him out of the building, but he does know that it was the "kinder anti-christ" who made him leave the building. He also tells us about the twelve checks that were deposited into the bank account of Brent's friend, who is a lawyer. The checks were all deposited over a period of six years, and they were all written to a "community center" in "the roseland neighborhood" . We learn that this is the same neighborhood that wendell is running against in the upcoming election. He says that he knows about the corruption "cataract" , and that's why he wants to run for office in the first place. But he also knows that "wendell" isn't perfect, and she hates that she's seeing neighborhoods plagued with poverty and despair. She hates that "it's down" to "this" neighborhood. She's seen "neighborhoods plagued by poverty" and "depressed" people. So, she hates "that" neighborhood and wants to destroy "the good man" so that she can get rid of "the bad man" and make the neighborhood a better place to live. She wants to make sure that "the rest of us" don't "do our best" to forget about her. Wendell was supposed to be a "great force for righteousness" and order, and the narrator says that this will get "gene" into the neighborhood where he'd been supposed to have it. But the narrator also says that the "super detective" would never know "hell" from a "hole in the ground"
