About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that the police detective who killed Jake is now trying to gain favor with the New York Police Department. We learn that this detective has been on the force for five years, and that he's been promoted to detective. We also learn that Jake's body was found in the middle of a crime scene, so it's safe to assume that he was murdered by someone who was looking for him. David is shocked that the detective is trying to make a name for himself on the police force, and he asks the detective if he can help him find Sara. The detective says he doesn't have time to chitchat with visitors on a field trip, so he'll go anyway. David reminds the detective that he used to go on a school trip to Liberty Island when he was a kid. He says he'd appreciate the sights and sounds of the place, but he can't bring himself to go there again. Sara reminds him that she's in shock, and she asks him not to follow her, because she'll be hurt if she does. David tells her to take her coat off, and says he wants to know why she ever decided to take him in, and why she would become so mad if she ever wanted to be taken in by the police. He also asks if there's any truth to the rumor that the fbi, the cia, and the nasa are at the scene of the crime to investigate a mysterious organic substance that was found there.
