About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn more about the "Covenant" and how they've been using it to their advantage. In fact, the narrator tells us, they're about to "get their ultimate prize" , which is "infinite power, eternal youth, rewriting history . . nothing of it" . We're not sure what that means, but we're guessing it means that they'll be able to "give the stone to Sara" and "give it to her" in the afterlife. The narrator then tells us that he's not going to give up his "damned sacred" and his "eternal youth" to anyone. He's just going to live his life, and he'll never be a "murderer" again. He says that his father is "a rest" and that his "soul is already damned" and he can finally "put to rest" the "big secret" of his family's past. He tells us he'd like to know how the "freak tournament" at the theater came about and how it's working for him now. He wants to know what's going on with the "chick cop" and the "nottingham henchman" and all that other stuff. He also wants to find out how he can help her escape her family. He has an appointment with "sheila stein" and she's got a nine-year-old girl who needs a "rehab center" for sick children. She's also got a "ripper" named Jeanny who's supposed to bring her niece to "green willow." The narrator is psyched to see her and tells her that she'll have to leave him alone if she doesn't tell him the truth.
