About This Chapter
"Angry Redemption" The narrator tells Dr. Hutton that he's heard the same thing over and over again: that people don't pay him enough for his services. He's been through a lot, he says, and he doesn't want to be a burden to anyone else. He wants to be able to share his feelings with people who are "complete goddamn strangers" . The narrator says he knows the rest of America wants to feel "validated" and "shared their feelings" with complete strangers, but that's not what he wants to do. He also says that the woman who committed the crime should not be punished, since he'd rather not waste the police department's money finding the murderer. The doctor says he'll be glad to find out who the murderer is if he takes his meaning. The detective says he has had a "interesting career" in law enforcement, and that he can't be reminded that he is "serious bad luck" to people around him. One night, the detective and his partner responded to a call for domestic violence, and the detective killed the shooter. He left the job because he wasn't willing to risk his kids growing up without their mom. He thanks the doctor for finding his daughter safe and sound, and says that being a mom means sacrificing for your kids. The father says that he and his sister aren't close to finding hope. Even if the doctor would've walked away, he wouldn't have left. He says, "There was nothing left -- not my favorite topic -- but I always felt like I chose disappointed him." He says that everything is "cleared away" from the house, but there's still a "big hole" in the ground. The only thing he wants
