In this chapter, we learn that Corin is an old friend of Sara's, and that he has been trying to find her ever since they last saw each other. He tells her that he's had a "stretch of bad luck" in the past few years, and now that she's brought her friends with her, everything is going to hell. He's going to write them a check for all the money they've spent on Corin's behalf. Corin tells Sara that he went to her apartment, but she was already on her way out. He asks her to have a bottle of scotch with him, and she says she doesn't have much for it, but that's okay, because they're going back to their old ways. He says that he is a "proper fortified" man, and he hopes that Sara can use him to help her out. Sara says that she hopes Corin will be able to use her friend's presence to help Corin, because Corin seems to be a "twisted fellow" who has been chasing Corin across two continents. She says that if Corin turns himself in, she'll be out of work for a week. She asks Corin to meet her at the office tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. .
