The chapter opens with a description of the police officer who was shot and killed earlier in the day. It is revealed that the officer was a detective named Frank Pezzini. Pezzini had been called to the scene of the crime because a woman was screaming in pain and pleading for help. The woman's body was found with a large number of bullet holes in it. The bullet casings were found to be made out of a gang type weapon. The police officer reports that the woman screamed and then pulled the tentacles of the dead woman away from her. The officer says that she dragged herself away before they arrived at the scene. The man who found the body says that he saw the man take a spill of blood off the road and his eyes seemed "dizzyed and gait staggered" . The narrator tells the reader that the man's company went public and that he had to return there to sign the legal papers. He tells the audience that he has procured "the luscious anna" as his hunting pet. He then tells the story of how the man had traveled around the world and met with "the most influential gurus in all the world" to spread his message, but that he still wanted to be satisfied. He should have realized that nothing would site him, he says, but he had an ulterior motive. Now don't punish you again, tonight, hump . the narrator tells us that he plans to break the "backbone" of many people's lives. He says he is not some "shoddy street criminal" that he can push around. When he opens the box, he finds that his father had told him that he didn't have to identify the body because it was his father who had died in the service of his country. He remembers threatening the family that if they killed their father, they would hurt him. Finally, the businessman who had bailed out the rookie police officer drops the case against the officer. He also tells the narrator that he needed to hide the woman from the man who wanted to kill her. He asks if anyone would be willing to pay for the identification of the woman. He reminds himself that he thanked his father for the break when they saw each other the last time he saw him. Sara tells him that she is not her father and that she does not care about her. She tells him to calm down. She says that sometimes her father is late for work and that sometimes he is getting her present. He is not dead, she says, and he is coming home
