About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a flashback to a time when David was a student at the university. He tells the story of how a photographer friend of his once told him that a lot of young men and women have a "perfect dysfunctional relationship" with their models. He says that he knows a man in the village who can set him up in the "coolest clothes" if he shows up with David. David tells the chief that he has just been working as a night and day laborer and that his wife has been taking care of him. The chief tells him that he should have pulled Sara off it long ago. David says that no one dreams of becoming a cop in New York City, only on a "larger scale." The chief says that they must be mistaken for someone else. David is sorry, he says, but he must be going. He tries to explain that he is here to talk to the chief about his new job, not his style. He asks the chief why everyone wants his stuff, or his partner dies, or that his weapon looks like a gun. He hopes that the chief can tell him what he needs to know. One half hour later, no sign of the chief, or lisa, or any of the other officers. David asks if they can share his questions with his love.
