About This Chapter
"Rebirth Part Three" The narrator begins this chapter by saying that the people of the city are not worthy of a fountain of water. He says that his soul has already spoken for him, and that he has been conditioned by his years as a police officer to respond to the people in a certain way. He tells the audience that the city is full of "ritualized" people who are "stuck to their ass" . He compares the city to a "witchblade" , and says that he will take out the tires of the witch, but she will resist him. The narrator says that the gang problem in the city has been licked for a couple of months, and he would like to do something to keep it from getting worse. He adds that corruption runs deep in Chicago, and sometimes it "pops back up" from the ground. He is thinking about the fact that even if he doesn't have the "great love" he once had, he can still have "a bit of the great stuff" that comes with that love. He mentions that the door to the apartment of the man in question was forced open, and the door lock has been broken. Two distinct tire tracks are found in the alley. The door has been grabbed by a man who wouldn't speak, and a western misdirection has been used to get the man into the apartment. The witches were fooled by the magic of cain, and they fell off or got blown off, the narrator says. He also mentions that he is in a hurry to get to the city. He asks the narrator to let him know about the tickets for parking. He wonders why the detective is so hurrying to get there, and wonders if it is because he is getting hunches. The detective says that many fingers are missing, leading him to question the contents of American pork products . The red-haired man is identified as the perpetrator, and previous encounters with him to defer suspicions.
