About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that detective David wohl Christinaz was once a member of the New York City Police Department. He is now a detective in the Greenwich Village district. He tells us that he has always wanted to be a cop, even when he was a child, because he knew that he would have to work for the likes of Starsky and hutch. He says that the system of double- and triple-murderers in New York is a system that has been in place for a long time. He warns that criminals will walk into the district anytime they can get their hands on the cash. He also says that he will not leave anything out in the tournament hall. He asks if anyone is listening in on the scene of the crime, and the detective replies that he is. He then asks if the woman in the room was hot. The detective says he can't see her because of the vein on her forehead, which makes him laugh. Then the detective asks if he is talking to his partner, and he says that his partner is out of the hospital, and that he thinks he was doing too much Samplin. Then he asks if there is anyone in the district who will be able to help him with his scheme. The chief says that there are a couple of fine looking competitors, and they will be in town for a dinner. He suggests that they not put all of their confidence in the winner of the tournament, since he has never seen anyone who would be among them. . David says he misses looking at the tournament room, and wonders if there was a murderer in it. He wonders if the motive for the crime was robbery, and asks if it is a cruel world in which murder is the most common crime. He decides to take a look at the room, but he is interrupted by the arrival of Tony Cugliani, who has been a fixture in the area for many years. He recognizes him as a former member of New York's police force. He thinks that he was killed in the line of duty, but now he is a hero.
