About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a soliloquy by Sara, in which she laments the fact that no one has come to her brothel to find out what has happened to her husband and his family. She asks her partner, Friar, to tell her the truth, but he refuses to do so, saying that demons are "such idiots" . She tells him that she has never been to a "new city" before, and wonders why he would want to come to a brothel run by "far east demons." She asks him if he would kill her, and he replies that he wouldn't want to lie to her. He tells her that they left him in charge of the brothel for three days, and that he doesn't know anything about his former partner. He says that they don't have anything except "dead ends" , but that they do know that Jacky was an orphan when he was a "mob hitman," and that his daughter was his daughter's father. He explains that he was anxious to find the place where Jacky and his daughter shared their bedroom, but they didn't expect him to find it there. He wonders how Jacky's daughter ended up becoming the "angelus" in the brothel. She must have transformed into the angelus because she was closest to Jacky, who was always the one who paid the price for her services. He asks Sara if there is anything else in the house that they should check out, and she says that there isn't. She says that the place looks "creepy," but that it isn'ta "darkling." He asks her to stay with him, but she refuses, saying, "What am I suppposed -- come on -- rooney -- stay with me -- stay -- no -- .
