About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that he got into the police force because he wanted to be able to go to a farmer's stand in the middle of the night to pick up his last hamburger. He says he's not sure how many there are, but he figures it's at least three. He's a city girl, so his experience with "slaughtered livestock" is "exactly zip" . First, she says, her uncle's dairy farm used to have coyotes try to kill a calf, but not "adults like this" , so they rule out coyotes. Then there used to be a "big cat" come through and pull down a "heifer" for a meal, and then there was usually a "mountain lion" coming through and pulling down the heifer for food. The narrator wonders if this is the same wolf that killed the mayor's "freak" in the junkyard. He asks the mayor if he can put a wolf pelt on his wall if he wants. The mayor says he can't, since it was a "civil exchange" with the mayor, but the narrator says he doesn't want to assume the worst, so he'll give the wolf pelt to the mayor as a kind of token of gratitude. He tells the mayor that he'd like to know what the heck is going on over here, and the mayor says that he thought he heard something, but then saw a "weird-ass big wolf" coming toward him. He wonders if it could have torn him apart, and Kate ran away. Kate will want to know who the wolf is, he says, and they call her "sara pezzini." The narrator says that Kate probably ran away because the wolf passed her with "flying colors," which means he was looking for her. Kate is going to ask the wolf to heal her, and she's going to call him "sara."
