About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn more about Sara's story. She's a ghost, and she's been living in Chicago for a long time. She used to work at Rogers Park, but she never came back. She doesn't know if she is dead or alive. Sara tells us that she used to have a crush on Tom, but now he's in a bad way. He's not the only one who's had trouble with drugs and alcohol. He used to drink because of her, but he stopped when she started to show up. She was crying and screaming because she wanted him to save her. She didn't want to go away, so she came to her, crying, and screaming. No one knows whether she is alive or dead. Sara says that she was more used to chasing ghosts than she was to chasing deadbeats. She says that, as she hears it, "spooks arent unusual in windy city" . So, what's going on? Well, it sounds like Sara is trying to help Tom. She tells him that her name is sara, and that she worked in Rogers Park back in the day. She works there now, too, but never comes back. It'll take a boatman a while to find her, she says, because she works in a graveyard called "the ashen lands" , which means "black lands" in German. She explains that she got into a bad debt with a company that gave her an injection, and then she woke up in this graveyard. She calls it the "ashen lands," and says that it's all part of her "own thing," which is why she never returns to Rogers Park. She asks if she can help tom, and he says that he'd like to help her, too. But, he says, "it's hard, talking to someone outside , it hurts . . haunting him . it is not your fault " . he says. He tells her that he got himself into a "little debt" with some "not very nice" people, who gave him an injection and then he woke up here in the graveyard. He says that the "Ashen Lands" are "all sort of" involved in his own thing, and not all of them are dead. He adds that there are other places in the city where the spirits can get through, but there are also "people see ghosts" there
