In this chapter, we learn that the protagonist, David, is in the middle of a confrontation with a man who has been stalking him. The man is none other than kenneth irons, who has warned him that he will be killed if he does not leave the island. The protagonist tells his friend, jake, that he is not sure if the man is still alive, but he is sure that it is because of kenneth's warning. He tells jake that he has been living in the apartment for six years without a complaint, and that he knows that kenneth is a friend of his. He asks if he can speak to her alone, and she tells him that she is sure she likes him. She says that the man she has been with is a crook and will kill her, but that if he is with her, it will be a change of scenery. She asks if she can ask him about the cure for cancer, and he tells her that if she asks him about it, he will get used to it. She tells him to get out of the car and stop stalking her, and asks him to explain why he was there. He says that he was only there for her protection, and if he said anything to her about her, that is not true, and how she knows what he is thinking
