About This Chapter
In this second chapter, Jim continues to wonder where he went. He wonders where Rosalita is, and wonders if she is with him. He also wonders if the old woman he beat up is pressing charges against the man who beat her, and he wonders if he is just a club-hopping smooth talker, a cain, or a jorgenson. sara tells him that the alderman, spiegel, has allowed the sex-traffickers to use his district as a place where they can sell their wares. Jim wonders if there is some kind of magic in him that makes him fall in love with the real world. He asks if he can take a ride to the magic show, but sara says that she doesn't need a ride, because she has her own magic that keeps her warm. She also tells him about the beating she received from the police, and she wonders if it was enough to keep him from letting a man he just met tonight take her to his show. She tells him he had a good time going to the seamstress's shop, and that he had to see the police for beating on a lady. He tells her that he didn't have enough money to keep her from taking him to the show, so he took her to the swedish covenant hospital, where he could watch his shows. He says that one of the guys who had been following him around for the past three weeks has been watching him, and now he is going to have to figure out a way to get around them. He decides to take a look at the journal of his son, who has been doing well in his job. He wants to know how he would survive if he lost his son. He goes to the chain-link gate, where the grieving parents stand in the snow, contorted by their grief. He waits for a few blocks, and then he smells the smoke iron of the woman he just beat up. He is glad that the night activities were not dangerous. He wakes up his son and cooks him breakfast.
