The next morning, the Governess and her companion, Sara, discuss the events of the previous day. The Governess tells Sara that she and the Englishman were supposed to go to a freemason's meeting, but that the meeting was canceled because of the strange behavior of the local law enforcement officer, who had cut his throat with a razor. She tells the pair that the police officer will be okay, and that he will stick a shard of glass through his left eye and into his brain.
