In this second part of the story, Petramale and Kate discuss the fate of Peter, who has been condemned to hang by the neck. Kate says that Peter is as dead as they are, and that the door is their only way out. She says that she will put a hole in the wall to make it easier for them to escape. She also says that if they run away, they will be torn apart. She swears that if she were not there to keep her alive, they would tear her apart. They are about to run away when they hear a gunshot, and they decide to cut off the way to the front so that they can get to the other side of the wall. Kate tells the deputy that she has never killed anyone and that she would never kill a soul. She tells him that it is better if he holds on to this, because then he will be looking for the next sheriff in the county.
