About This Chapter
In the year 1996 , a successful businessman named jon epner fell on hard times. He lost his job at a giant dot-com company and was forced to become a detective. He found a way back into the top job, but first he had to go through a series of crimes. The first was white-collar forgery, and the second was embezzlement. Kate offers him a job as a medical examiner, but he refuses, saying he doesn't want to leave his family. Kate asks him how he's doing, and he tells her that his partner, jon, has died of natural causes. Kate tells him that she's beginning to think that she has a knack for rooftops. The next day, Kate thanks him for coming to her room. She asks him if he ever tried meditation. He says he'd been trying to talk to her about a case, but she is not there. He tells Kate that he and Sara are working on the same case, and that he needs to prepare for a party that's going to be attended by a bunch of religious people. Kate suggests that they go to the bar, but the detective says he won't drink or gamble. He's not a religious person, he says, and this is his first time going to a party. Kate says that he looks like a "solite" , which is a term used to describe people who don't belong to any particular denomination. The detective says that this isn't a bad thing, but that it's like "a brainwashed look" . Kate points out that this is the first time that he has been at a party, so he'll have to wait and see what happens.
