About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a flashback to two years ago, when the vatican was captured and brought to the guillotine. The narrator tells us that the guillotine was a symbol of the "angel of the lord" , and that it was a reminder of the time when he was a prisoner of the devil. He tells the audience that he has returned to his former life and that he is determined to get his job back as sheriff of Saratoga County, New York. He says that he does not care what the mayor thinks of his marksmanship, as long as the mayor does not have any excuses for not giving him the job back. He adds that he knows that the mayor is not going to give him back the job because of his "marksmanship" . Sara tells the narrator that she is going to get her job back, and the narrator tells her that it is like a "gunfight" between the devil and the angelus. She says that she will descend to the underworld and claim the "last of what is mine." She asks the narrator to allow them to accompany her to the city. She tells him that she does not need anything else for him, and he replies that he doesn't feel he is ready to resume his duties as sheriff. He points out that since he took over as sheriff, there have been no more serious incidents. Sara says that the only thing that pilcher has done is to "prophesize up that hat." The narrator says that this is evidence that Sara is not ready to return to the sheriffs department. He reminds her that she can continue to choose whether or not she wants to be a sheriff.
