About This Chapter
"Rebirth" The narrator tells us that he's on his way to the "world of dungeons and dragons" to "save that guy" . He wants to thank the bartender for his pancakes. He's just a politician, he says, and it's his sister who's made him realize that he can be a better person. The bartender agrees, and the narrator thanks him for entering the "real world of the supernatural." He says that amina jackson is the one who has put an end to the violence in his life, and he wants her to die. The narrator says that he knows about the "vaginal vein" , which is the "will of the one not born," and he says he'll tell the bartender all about it. He also says that sleeping in his office isn't a good habit, and that he has to do penance for his sins. He tells the bartender that he met a woman today who set off a "every warning bell" in his body. He thinks she might be responsible for the "greatest evil" he has ever seen. He asks the bartender to follow her around, corroborate his vibe, and find out how many cabs she got into. He says the bartender is a cop, that much he can tell, but that he is also a "tortured broken human being." The narrator wants to raise his glasses to a "familiar girl" and says he has seen her in his dreams. He compares her to a witchblade, a creature that corrupts and destroys everything good. He likes to read a book by a prison teacher named "the wardea." The teacher's name is Oswald, and his story is "the black kid story." He was twenty years older than his half-sister, his mom, and people thought he was eccentric, but to Oswald, he was "bigger than life." They used to talk about how he was a rich white man who moved to the gold coast, or how he used to order himself a "chocolate shake" every time he gave the order to "ace a cop." Oswald says that the narrator's favorite book is the story of "the poj it o' xoog," or "an angry caot" in a ghost, that would have killed the family who moved into the "maghost home" if it had been there to help them.
