About This Chapter
This chapter opens with a description of the crime scene. It's a crime scene in which a burglar has broken into a house and locked all the windows. The burglar has taken a chainsaw to the house and cut off four people's throats. The doctor has put his patient in a wheelchair so he can leave the house alone, and the doctor's wife, who works as a police detective, is there to help. She tells the intruder that she's working on a case where she expects the unexpected. She asks the intruder if he's found any information about the family, and where they'll be staying. The intruder says that he has found the body of a man who looks like William Shatner, and that there's also a body stuck in a wall over there. The two men discuss the fact that the bodies were cut with razors or similar devices. They also discuss whether or not it's possible to cut a body like this with a knife, and if so, what kind of cutting device it would be. They talk about how they're both married, and how they don't watch much daytime television because they've got children. The narrator asks the detective if he knows the man's name, and he says he does. The detective says he doesn't know, but that he heard the sound of someone's voice, which he thinks is the voice of his mother's former boyfriend. He says that the man was "mean and he hurt" him, and then he hears "this thing" coming from inside him. He wants to know what this "thing" is, so he tells the detective to "get me a blanket" .
