About This Chapter
In the second part of the story, Regan tells her daughter that she is glad that Charlotte has died, because she was planning to kill her father. She tells her that she does not mean to hurt her father, but that he is not welcome in Regan's house. Regan reminds her that her daughter was a "sweet, loving, beautiful child" when she was her daughter, and that this is not the hope she gave birth to. She says that if she is talking to gods, they are the real thing, and they will rule the world once they are here. Regan asks her daughter to take her mother to her bedroom, and Regan says that she will come and get her when the war is over. Regan tells Regan that she has changed the balance of power in her favor, and she chooses light, which is older than darkness. Regan is sorry for her daughter's death, but she feels a "wave of hatred" for Regan for all of the pain she has caused the world. Regan feels that she should have left her alone to live her life, but Regan says she would rather have been left alone to die. Regan closes her eyes and says that there is "light," and there is no more darkness on the face of earth. Regan says, "The darkness is gone, what about my -- she'snot your daughter," and she says that it is time for Regan to go home.
