About This Chapter
In the second part of the play, Dr. Bledsoe and his wife are still in hiding, and the doctor asks his wife what she wants. She replies that she wants to be free, but that the mistress of the brothel has "bound us here" and that she cannot leave. The doctor tells her that he has plans for her, and that the people in the brothel want to talk to her. He says that he brought a present with him to the brothel, but he is not really driving. He tells his wife that he wants to return to New York City and that he is certain that he will need to find a new line of work. He asks her how her mother is doing, and she tells him that she is still worrying about him. She says that she does not want to tell him anything about their daughter, but she does want to know what he is doing with his life. She asks him if he is all right, and he says that the eggs that he had the previous morning were probably off. He does not know if there are rumors going around, but it is not. He is a detective, and they did give birth to their daughter.
