About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that the last man to be resurrected was Jesus Christ. He was the last of the "apostles," or devils, who were sent to hell by God. The devil tells us that he's not going to become the next one, though. He's seen things, he says, that scare children into obedience, but they're real. He carries the "spear of destiny" , the Roman sword that pierced Jesus' side on the cross. He still does his work, though, because he has lost his faith in God. He doesn't have a lot of money, but there are still people in the church who help him. The engine is dead as the Pharaoh back in Egypt. Thanks to the sand, he has witnessed miracles. But just as often, the prayers seem unheeded. He says, "And the miracles prove itself to be false" .
