The chapter opens with the narrator lamenting that he has to escape from the "streak of light" that surrounds him. He realizes that he will be blamed for the deaths of many people if he does not escape. He resolves to remove the scarlet pearl from his body and transform it into the form of the undead. He gives the pearl to the undead, who gratefully accepts it. The narrator then tells the audience that he is indebted to his brother for the second time.
