In this chapter, Dr. Manette explains that she intends to teach the child the art of law. She tells the boy that the law is not as powerful as he thinks it is, but that it can still help the child reach his divine destiny. He asks which of the seven laws of the universe has the most powerful power, and she tells him that the laws of darkness, light, chaos, lightning, and metal are the most superior. She then explains that it will take twenty years for the child to reach the level of understanding that he needs to understand the laws. She also explains that the child will need to strengthen his body in order to gain the power of the black spring.
