This chapter's epigraph comes from a famous line in the play, The Merchant of Venice. It's a line about a merchant who's about to be killed. The merchant is about to kill himself when he hears the sound of a ship's engine, and he realizes that it's the ship that's going to kill him. He realizes that the ship is going to have to come to him, because he's not going to be able to get away with killing the merchant. So the merchant decides to take the ship to Venice, where he'll find a way to save the merchant's life.
