The guards begin to show up, and the narrator wonders why they're there. He's looking for the patriarch of his family, and he can't find him. The two of them take him to meet the patriarch, and they thank him for coming. The narrator realizes that they've already memorized all of his faces, and that the patriarch must have already passed down an order to the family to kill anyone who's seen leaving or entering the banquet hall.
