The fairy king is too late, too slow, to protect the girl from the wolf's evil. He's always been late to his party, and now he's even late because of the girl's death. He says that he never expected the wolf to be so scary when he took him on, but now that the girl is dead, he can't bring himself to return to his old form. He also says that the wolf is like a "captal of holy krige" , which is a reference to the helmet he wore when he was in his original form.
