About This Chapter
In the midst of the fight, the monster realizes that he is about to erase his own memories. He tries to convince himself that it is not his intention to erase the memories of others, but to eliminate the "static" ones that have developed in his brain. He realizes that his goal is not to fight the monster right now, but rather to take him hostage so that he will be able to escape. The monster, however, does not understand why the king would want to erase all of his memories. The two men share a "same heart" , and the monster explains that he does not need a "heart" or a "memory" in order to survive. In fact, he says, there is "no such thing as a "magic of the heart" in the monster's room. He tells the king that he wants to give him one of his "treasures" . He asks the king why he wanted to stop him. The king explains that it was a "kind of charm" to comfort the king's son when he was "grieved over" by his father's death.
