The two of them head north to the "mega dozer" of giants, where they plan to meet up with Merlin. Merlin asks if he's sure that the "heretic" is still alive, and Merlin says that he doesn't think that galland is as easy to defeat as he was in the past. He also tells Merlin that he can't just sit around and wait for him to come back. He's got to go out and tell everyone about what's going on in the village. He says that the matrona told him that he should protect people while in the service of the state, and that's exactly what he has to do. He asks if there's a giant behind him, and the giant girl says that she looks like a human, but she's not. He tells her to run away, and she says that'll be the thing for her to cover up her magic. She also tells him that she has eaten only one human soul, and he says that it's because she has a good nose, which makes her even hungrier. She says that there are no fairies or giants behind her, just her empty belly. She asks why she is alive, but the giant says that her face and the battle hammer she used to kill him are the only things that matter to her. She tells him to stay back, and then she tells him she'll kill him again.
