About This Chapter
This chapter's epigraph comes from a conversation between Gil and Desdemona. Gil tells Desdemonas that his wounds are so deep that he needs to be killed ASAP. He also says that his healing magic is not enough to save him. He begs the two men to help him, but they refuse, saying that they are busy taking care of other things. They leave the matter to the two young men, who are overjoyed at the thought of helping their master. They then begin to talk about the "superstitious" rank of the demons. They are, in fact, the oldest demons in existence, and they are said to have been the leaders of the holy war during the time of the Crusades. The two men agree that they would be no match for each other, and so they begin to play a game of "exceeding the bounds." They loop a ray of magic around the foot of the "sacred treasure lady" , and then they run to the other side of the door. This time, however, they are unable to do so, because the magic of the other demons is too strong for them.
