About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that the "legends pursued the fox's sin of greed" . In other words, the "witch" of the story was greedy, and the "virtues" were greed. In this case, greed is greed, and greed is the sin of the gods. The gods pursued the "fox sin" of greed because they were greedy. Ban tells us that the gods pursued "the fox sin" because they wanted "some thing" from him, and that's why he's grateful to have her as a "rapier." He's also glad that she's taken off her rapier's hand, because he can't beat her with his sword. Ban's not happy about this, either. He says that he spent his life in "complete and utter isolation" , and now he wants to "under stand" his brother, elaine. He wants him to help elaine now, because elaine is about to attack him. The two men argue about whether or not they should get away, but Ban insists that they should borrow the spear and fight. They'll "wipe that smug smile" off her face, he says, and then they'll be able to "wipe out" her smug smile too. They do, and they're about to kill elaine when they hear the sound of the spear. They rush off to kill him, but before they can do so, Ban interrupts them, saying that he doesn't want to use his sword as a shield. He'd rather use his body to protect elaine, so he'll give him a kiss before he leaves.
