In this chapter, we learn that the demon-possessed Lucentis is trying to save his master, Malateste, from being eaten alive by the "four command ments" . He tells his master that he has taken countless lives and tried to kill his beloved, and that he wants to save him. He says that he is "despicable and loathsome" and that the only thing he can do is to "drive these commandments away" from him. The two men agree that they will "eat you right up" if he does not leave. Malatest elopes with his lover, and he tells her that he wishes he could see her one last time. She is not the woman he killed, but the name of her lover. She was the demon that he was based on, and she was the one he killed. He asks why he should be the only person to go through such a thing, and says that it is an "unforgiveable sin"
