In this chapter, we find out that the two men are in the middle of a fight. The narrator is shocked to see that both men are down. He thinks that they've both been fighting so hard that their bodies are starting to fail them. He's also shocked to learn that the captain is losing his ability to keep pace with the man who's stealing all his stuff. He figures that if the captain can't keep up with Ban's speed, then the captain shouldn't be able to keep up at all. This is the first time that the narrator has seen two men fighting at the same time, and he's shocked to realize that both of them are losing their power. He wonders if they're going to give up, but he knows that if they do, Ban will win.
