In this chapter, we are introduced to a new character, a young man named Evremonde. He is a member of the druid community, and he has just returned from a trip to the moon. He tells us that he has come back from the moon because he is in love with a woman named Elaine, who has returned from the dead. Elaine tells him that she has been called for by someone, and she tells him not to worry, because she is not going to ask for help from anyone. She says that the door separating the two worlds has been opened, allowing the dead to come back to life, and the souls to be tainted like the ones who were killed by hendrickson. She tells him to go away, but he refuses, saying that he will not ask anyone for help. He says that he does not know who his real parents were, but that both he and Elaine have helped him out, and that they will come to help him out if he needs anything.
