The chapter opens with a flashback to ancient times, when magic flowed from the land into the animals and plants. Now, however, the magic has dried up, and the population of the land has grown, absorbing the magic. The narrator tells us that if they eat the plants now, they'll be able to rid themselves of the humans that have come to inhabit the land. He tells the audience that he went to the village of Byron to look for his sister, Veronica, who is rumored to be dead. When they arrive at the village, they find that Veronica and her sister are not dead, but are still alive. They hear a voice, which they assume is the voice of the monster they're about to encounter. They realize that the monster is a different beast from the red demon they've seen before, and they need to combine their four powers to defeat the monster.
