This chapter opens with a fireworks display on the northern part of the city. The narrator laments that he would have gone to the festivities if the narrator had called him. He is jealous that his friend's talent does not interfere with his work. He asks the narrator if he will write an "erotic story" for them. He tells the narrator that he will get 40,000 yen if he does so. He then asks if he had a "spark or anything" in his first impression of the narrator. He says that he thought the narrator seemed like a "regular guy" but that he had asked him to have sex so that he wouldn't see her again. He feels that the sensation in his hands makes him feel as though he is wrapped in his lover's embrace.
