The chapter opens with a flashback to the beginning of the novel, in which Hiroshi and his mother are still alive. Hiroshi is now ten years old. He tells his father that he is happy to be a son, but he still wonders what his mother would think of him. He asks his father if he is okay with breaking up with his first love, Shuu San. He says that Shuu was his first and only love, and he had a feeling that he would never be able to break it off.
